| Joel began his interest in pottery in the mid 1990's. Having
worked as
a research microbiologist at the University of Washington Medical Center
previous to this, it was a big change in his life. He was fortunate to
be acquainted with an internationally exhibited potter in Vancouver BC,
who tutored him on two occasions in the early years. In Seattle he
studied at Seward Park Clay Studio for a few years before moving to the
Pottery School in Pioneer Square. After a few more years of practice
and further study there, he took a course and subsequent workshop at
Pottery Northwest in 2004. In March 2005, he joined Seward Park Clay
Studio as a Resident Artist.
Initially influenced by the ancient pottery of the Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans, his interest has since migrated to the pots of Japan and China. The centuries old firing process of RAKU, first developed in Japan and then adapted in the US in the 1950's, has also inspired his work. Visit the RAKU page for a mini tour of this unique firing process. All of Joel's pieces are individually hand formed, initially on a
potter's wheel and sometimes further manipulated by hand through a
variety of techniques. Therefore no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
Pots shown in the Gallery are representations of his work. His
work can be seen at least twice a year at Seward Park Clay Studio's
Spring Sale and Holiday Sale. Visit the Events page for more
information on these as well as additional opportunities to see his
pots |
